ENA Research: ENNSIRP UpdateThe Ethiopian Nurses Needlestick Injury Research Project (ENNSIRP) was started in July 2006. The objectives of this study are to understand the prevalence/occurrences, determinants, reporting patterns, and risk perception of needlestick injuries (NSI) amongst nurses in Ethiopia. In December 2007, Neima Ahmed, the ENNSIRP coordinator, completed the assessment phase of the project in five sites across Ethiopia. The five sites assessed were Harar, Dessie, Awassa, Mekele, and Addis Ababa. The study aims to identify the factors associated with NSI, and will make preventive recommendations based on this data to protect nurses against the unnecessary risks of NSI. The data has now been collected and a preliminary analysis has taken place. The ENNSIRP coordinator and advisory committee had meetings with the Canadian Nurses Association representatives, Dr. June Webber and Ms. Nadia Hamel, at the end of February. The purpose of the ENNSIRP meetings was to create a new work plan for the intervention phase of the project. The intervention will be based on the data collected in the assessment and will be rolled out in the next few months. The ENNSIRP project will be completed as of the end of May. The team hopes to disseminate the findings of the study as well as distribute helpful resources to help prevent NSI and to improve the occupational health and safety environment for nurses in Ethiopia. The VON: ENA’s Annual Magazine! The next volume of the Voice of Nurses (VON) magazine will be available shortly, so look out for it!
